In my apartment, Diptyque is part of the lifestyle. What’s more inviting than a living room scented with the uplifting Baies or comforting Amber candle? No wonder my guests never want to leave.
Some people obsess over the decor style, but everyone—literally everyone—says the place smells divine. That’s because Diptyque candles have a lingering yet subtle effect. I’m big on ambience, so the first thing I noticed is their ability to transform a space and encourage conversations or relaxation. My roommate and I not only have a Diptyque candle in each room (yes, including the bathroom, because who doesn’t love to take a late night shower with a candle burning and music in the background?), but we also burn them all year long. My sister says it’s excessive, but those who get it get it, and those who don’t don’t. We love our Diptyque home.
I’m late to the fan club (the brand launched as a fragrance and candle shop in Paris in 1961), but I finally see what the hype is about. The burning experience is truly what sets Diptyque apart, although the packaging alone is a conversation starter. As a collector of more than just the candles (it doesn’t help that there’s a Diptyque store only a short drive away), I can speak to the quality that’s poured into each product. Sure, there are more affordable scented candles out there, but if you fancy something elevated (as a gift to yourself, your hard-to-please boss or a friend who recently bought a house), turn to this heritage brand.
What Makes Diptyque Candles Special
First and foremost, Diptyque candles have a clean burn. Have you ever seen a jar turn black because the wick was angled towards the container or the wax was lopsided? Well you won’t with Diptyque. Secondly, the burn time is worth mentioning. Take for example the smallest Diptyque candle size; it burns for 20 hours, which depending on your usage, can last several days. Finally, the scents are refined and tend to fill up a room quickly. Bonus: the hand-blown glass jars are also gorgeous to display, making them worth reusing as containers for your makeup brushes or Q-tips.
All this to say, the quality is excellent and you get a lot of value for your money. To make navigating Diptyque’s world of candles easier, I’ve rounded up my top five scents ahead.
Baies
Like a walk through a garden brimming with flowers and fruits, the Baies candle combines notes of berries, blackcurrant leaves and roses. I typically stay away from floral candles, but the scent here is balanced. As much as I like going against the grain and embracing the underdog, Baies is a crowd favorite for a reason. You’d have to be allergic to candles to not like this scent. It’s a truly unique and instantly recognizable blend of floral and fruity.
→ When to burn: All year long. It’s a seasonless classic that adds a sense of freshness to any room.
→ Where to burn: Make it the centerpiece of your living room. The scent will quickly fill the space while being gentle on the nose.
→ How long does the scent last: Up to 3 hours after burn time.
→ In three words: Refreshing. Energizing. Distinct.
2. Ambre
If you gravitate towards woodsy scents, the Ambre candle was probably made for you. It’s the perfect match for a Saturday night in; pair it with a good book or movie on a projector. It’s a warm blend of vetiver and patchouli, marked with spice, incense and Tonka Bean. In other words, it smells grown and sexy.
→ When to burn: In the fall and winter. The musky aroma goes well with a cold night.
→ Where to burn: Best in bedrooms or smaller spaces. The scent is subtle and takes a bit longer to fill a room.
→ How long does the scent last: Up to 1 hour after burning.
→ In three words: Subtle. Woodsy. Grown.
Figuier
Burning the Figuier candle is akin to that feeling of opening the windows and letting fresh air in. Or maybe it’s like hugging a fig tree—you’ll take in the woody and fruity notes instantly. Made from crushed fig tree leaves, it has a warm, understated and rich scent. Similar to Baies, it is mature, gentle on the nose, and makes an excellent housewarming gift.
→ When to burn: All year long.
→ Where to burn: Office or home studio.
→ How long does the scent last: Up to 2 hours after burning.
→ Describe it in 3 words: Warm. Homey. Mature.
La Droguerie
Part of Diptyque’s homegoods collection, La Droguerie candle may be the least sexy of them all, but it delivers on its intended use (removing unpleasant odors). I use it primarily in the bathroom as I enjoy the calming blend of basil, mint and tomato leaf it’s made out of. You can also find it in my kitchen where it helps make washing dishes an almost therapeutic task.
→ When to burn: All year long.
→ Where to burn: In an enclosed space like a bathroom or kitchen.
→ How long does the scent last: Up to 3 hours after burning.
→ In three words: Soothing, Calming, Fresh.
34 Boulevard Saint Germain Candle
Admittedly, I found the smell of this candle too neutral to stand out at first. But I’ve grown quite fond of it over time, thanks in huge part to the way it feels to burn it in my room. With top notes of moss, black currant leaves and sundried figs, it has an overall sweet and comforting smell.
→ When to Burn: In the spring and summer.
→ Where to Burn: At home or at the office.
→ How long does the scent last? Up to 30 minutes after burning
→ In three words: Nostalgic, Powdery, Discreet.
